We encourage all new moms to breastfeed if they are able and interested. There are many benefits to breastfeeding for the mom and the new baby. These include bonding between mom and the new baby, weight loss for mom, and excellent nutrition for the baby. Breast milk also helps boost your new baby’s immune system; and it has been shown to decrease the amount of ear infections and other infectious diseases that your baby may get. Breast milk is easy for new babies to digest, and they tend to tolerate it best.
We recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first four to six months of your baby’s life with continued breastfeeding up to 12 months of age if you are able.
It is best to attempt breastfeeding soon after delivery and we have wonderful nurses and lactation consultants to help support breastfeeding moms. When you go home after delivery, there are other options for breastfeeding support including the LaLeche League and Certified Lactation Consultants. If you have questions or concerns regarding breastfeeding please don’t hesitate to call the office or speak with your baby’s doctor during an appointment.
